A 60-year-old man from Kerala died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Telangana’s Hyderabad, due to the injuries he sustained after the middle-berth seat in a train coach in which he was travelling fell on him due to improper chaining by another passenger, Government Railway Police (GRP) said on Wednesday, 26 June.
The incident happened on 16 June when Ali Khan CK from Kerala’s Malappuram was travelling to Agra along with his friend in the lower berth of the sleeper coach in the Ernakulam-Hazrat Nizamuddin Millennium Superfast Express – train number 12645, they said.
The train was passing through Warangal district of Telangana when the incident happened, a GRP official said, adding that the man suffered neck injuries and he was initially taken to a hospital in Ramagundam and from there he was shifted to a hospital in Hyderabad where he died while undergoing treatment on 24 June. A case has been registered regarding his death.
Citing a local report on Ali Khan’s death, the Congress in Kerala took to ‘X’ to criticise the condition of Indian Railways during the NDA rule. The post said, there are no enough seats, one can’t get safely into a train and that even if you get a seat, you either get killed in a train crash or “berth crash.”
Condition of railways under @AshwiniVaishnaw and @narendramodi:
-Not enough trains or seats
-You can’t safely get onto a train
-If you manage to get in, no seat
-Even if you get a seat, you could be killed in a train crash, ‘berth crash’ or poor hygienehttps://t.co/Xzinhaglvz— Congress Kerala (@INCKerala) June 26, 2024
However, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Railways denied Congress’ allegation and said that the accident did not happen due to defect in the berth but because a passenger hadn’t chained the middle-berth properly. “The seat was not in damaged condition, neither it fell down nor crashed. The seat was checked at Nizamuddin station and found ok,” the post in ‘X’ said.
