The death of a Thiruvananthapuram Corporation’s BJP Councillor, K Anil Kumar, has stirred a political controversy with the CPI(M) alleging that his party leaders and workers were responsible for his demise.

The BJP, meanwhile, distanced itself from the cooperative society and said it had no role in Kumar’s death. It further added that the party had intervened and deliberated with depositors for more time.

CPI(M) charges

However, CPI(M) District Secretary V Joy claimed that BJP leaders had taken large sums from the society for election campaigns and party programmes. He also levelled charges of irregular loans and benami transactions.

Education Minister V Sivankutty echoed a similar view, arguing that Kumar was betrayed by those closest to him. The minister said that the BJP could not wash its hands of the issue, given its control over the Valiyashala farm society.

Police indicated that in the absence of evidence for abetment to suicide, chances of further investigation were slim. However, the CPI(M) has been pressing the Home Department to order a fresh probe into the circumstances leading to Kumar’s death.
