A 24-year-old woman died after allegedly consuming cleaning acid at her marital home in Panathala in Kerala’s Kasaragod district late on Saturday night, 23 May, reportedly following marital distress.

Family alleges prolonged domestic abuse

Sufaida’s family alleged that she had been subjected to mental and physical harassment by her husband and mother-in-law over demands for gold ornaments.

They claimed the abuse had intensified over time and that, on an earlier occasion, Aadil had damaged Fathimath’s mobile phone to prevent her from informing her family or the police about the alleged violence.

The couple, who have a two-month-old infant, were scheduled to celebrate their first wedding anniversary on Monday.

According to the family, Sufaida’s parents had arrived at her marital home on the day of the incident to take her back with them, leading to an altercation.

During the dispute, her husband allegedly warned that she would not be allowed to return if she left with her parents. Following the confrontation, Sufaida allegedly consumed acid stored in the house.

Her family further alleged that she was not immediately taken for medical treatment and was left unattended for some time while being subjected to verbal abuse by her in-laws.
