Hassainar suffered a head injury and received three stitches following the attack.
A cough almost cost a man his life; not from the illness itself, but due to an annoyed neighbour.
58-year-old Hassainar, a newspaper distributor from Kasargod’s Manimunda, was allegedly attacked by his neighbour Jamsheer, who was annoyed by the former’s persistent cough. Jamsheer allegedly beat Hassainar up and even attempted to stab him with a knife. Hassainar suffered a head injury and needed three stitches following the attack.
Speaking to South First, the Manjeshwar police said a case has been registered based on a complaint filed by Hassainar and that an investigation is underway. No arrests have been made yet.
According to the FIR, the incident happened at 2:00 PM on August 31. Hassainar, who had been suffering from a cough, was attacked by Jamsheer, who allegedly barged into his house with the intention of assaulting him. Hassainar was in the kitchen preparing food for him and his bedridden wife when the attack happened.
The FIR alleged that an angry Jamsheer barged into Hassainar’s kitchen, got hold of his neck and verbally abused him.
The accused also threatened to kill Hassainar and subsequently attacked him using a tea pan from the kitchen. The accused hit Hassainar’s head repeatedly with the pan, causing the injuries. According to the complaint, Jamsheer revealed that he was annoyed by Hassainar’s persistent coughing, triggering the attack.

After attacking Hassainar with the pan, Jamsheer also allegedly went back to his house, fetched a knife and attempted to stab the former before being stopped by the bystanders. Hassainar was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for his wounds.
Notably, the incident comes just months after a 34-year-old man suffering from asthma lost his life to a similar attack by his neighbours in Bidadi on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
Vinod Kumar Shaini from Rajasthan succumbed to his injuries on February 11 after being brutally assaulted by his neighbours, who were annoyed by his constant coughing. Shaini had sustained severe neck injuries in the attack that happened on February 7.
