Synopsis: A section of hillside collapsed onto the Mananthavady–Boys Town–Iritty road in Wayanad, Keralam on Tuesday morning after days of heavy rain, narrowly missing a car. The district administration has closed the road, a key link between Wayanad and Kannur, until further notice amid concerns over further landslides. Police have advised motorists to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution on the Periya ghat, the main alternative route.
The Mananthavady–Boys Town–Iritty road in Keralam’s Wayanad has been closed until further notice after a section of a hillside collapsed onto the road at around 9 am on Tuesday, 25 August, following days of heavy rain.
A car narrowly escaped after the earth gave way just ahead of the vehicle. The district administration suspended vehicular movement along the route amid fears of further landslides. Efforts are under way to remove the debris.
The road is a key connection between Wayanad and Kannur. The Periya ghat is the main alternative route between the two districts.
The ghat, however, is also vulnerable to landslips. Heavy rain has continued in the region over the past two days. The persistent rainfall has increased the risk of soil erosion and slope failures.
Police have advised motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, not to cross barricaded or restricted areas, and exercise extreme caution while using the ghat road, especially at night.
