Heavy rain warning in Kerala: Yellow alert issued for seven districts

Synopsis: The IMD further in it’s safety advisory noted that lightning and thunderstorms can cause serious harm to people, animals, and electronic systems. At the first sign of lightning, move to a safe building and avoid open areas, terraces, and trees.

The IMD has warned of heavy rain in Kerala on Wednesday, 3 December, issuing a yellow alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Palakkad and Malappuram.

Isolated heavy showers (64.5 mm–115.5 mm in 24 hours) and thunderstorms are expected from Wednesday until 6 December.

Safety advisory

The IMD further issued safety guidelines:

  • Lightning and thunderstorms can cause serious harm to people, animals, and electronic systems. At the first sign of lightning, move to a safe building and avoid open areas, terraces, and trees.
  • Keep doors and windows closed, stay away from walls, unplug appliances, and avoid using wired devices or landlines.
  • Mobile phones are safe to use.
  • Do not park vehicles under trees, and if you are travelling, remain inside your vehicle and avoid cycling or biking until the lightning stops.
  • Refrain from going to open yards or terraces to collect clothes, and secure any objects that may blow away in strong winds.

Tamil Nadu rains

Meanwhile, in the neighbouring Tamil Nadu, Chennai was drenched on Wednesday morning as cold, cloudy weather continued for the third consecutive day, bringing moderate to light rain across several areas.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the remnant depression of Cyclone Ditwah has weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over the North Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coasts as of 5:30 am.

The RMC added that the system is expected to move slowly southwestwards across the northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and further weaken into a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours.

The Greater Chennai Corporation’s rainfall report for the 24 hours ending at 5:30 am on Wednesday recorded an average rainfall of 6.7 cm across the city.

Out of the 62 stations monitored, 19 reported heavy rain, two very heavy rain, and 41 moderate rain. The highest rainfall was observed in Ennore (13.5 cm), Wimco Nagar (11.8 cm), Manali New Town (11.4 cm), Kargil Nagar (9.3 cm), and Kathivakkam (8.5 cm).
