Synopsis: Even as Dharmendra Pradhan resigned as the education minister amid massive student protests, the BJP leadership has refused to sideline the MP and visibly showed support to him. Taking a similar stand is the Central University of Kerala, which in a social media post praised the former minister, sparking a political storm in the state.
”Dharmendra Pradhan Zindabad…!!” the slogan rang out in Parliament shortly before the Monsoon Session began. NDA MPs gathered around Dharmendra Pradhan, celebrating him as a ”warrior” and signalling that he continued to enjoy strong support within the ruling alliance.
The BJP was quick to rally behind Pradhan following his resignation on Saturday. Party President Nitin Nabin, along with Cabinet colleagues and other BJP leaders, publicly acknowledged Pradhan’s contribution and described his tenure as an important one for the party and the government.
Yet, the expressions of support have not come only from within the BJP or the broader Sangh Parivar ecosystem.
A Facebook post by the Central University of Kerala praising the former Union Education Minister has now attracted attention, raising questions about the university’s political positioning.
The post assumes significance against the backdrop of Kerala’s long-running debates over the alleged proximity of certain university authorities and vice-chancellors to organisations associated with the Sangh Parivar. The state has witnessed several controversies in the past involving universities and their leadership, particularly over allegations of political and ideological affiliations.
In that context, Pradhan’s resignation and the subsequent social media post from Central University have added a fresh dimension to an already contentious debate.

”The Central University of Kerala places on record its deep sense of appreciation for the distinguished services rendered by Shri Dharmendra Pradhan Ji to the nation and the higher education sector” the Facebook post read.
The university said that during Pradhan’s tenure as Union Education Minister, it received valuable support for expanding academic programmes and strengthening institutional infrastructure. It also credited his leadership in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP), saying it contributed to advancing a holistic, multidisciplinary and skill-oriented education system.

The post concluded by expressing gratitude for his contributions and extending best wishes for his future endeavours.
The post has triggered a debate on social media, with critics questioning the timing of the statement and its relevance amid ongoing student protests and political debates surrounding higher education institutions.
South First contacted the university seeking a response to the criticism, but did not receive a reply.

Reacting to the controversy, former State Education Minister V Sivankutty alleged that the BJP and RSS were attempting to expand their ideological influence in Kerala through institutions where they have power.
”The Sangh Parivar’s encroachment into academics has intensified. They are using the Governor as a tool to spread their ideology. This is evident in the administration of universities as well as in academic matters. Many people affiliated with the Sangh are now holding key positions in universities.” Sivankutty told South First.
He said the university’s post could be viewed as an expression of gratitude towards the BJP and RSS for continued political support and called for stronger protests against what he described as the “politicisation” of university administration.
”The university’s role should be to stand with the students. Such a post could have been avoided.” he said.
Current Education Minister N. Samsudheen also criticised the post, saying Pradhan’s resignation came after protests and serious allegations and that the university’s statement could provoke students.
”The timing of such a social media post is completely inappropriate. The Governor’s favorable stance is the only reason behind such moves. The issue of the Governor’s political stance and politics in university administration needs a broader debate. There has been a tussle between the Governor and the government over university affairs since the LDF’s tenure and it continues even now.” he told South First.
SFI national president Adarsh M Saji and KSU leaders in Kerala also criticized the university’s post, arguing that it undermined the student protests and the causes for which the students had been fighting.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader K Surendran supported the Central University’s action and questioned the criticism, asking what was wrong in praising and thanking Dharmendra Pradhan.
”He is still a Parliament member and there are no charges against him. He resigned not because of the protests, but because he took moral responsibility for the issue. He hasn’t done anything wrong. Why is there so much intolerance when it comes to someone supporting the Sangh Parivar? The nation is ruled by the Sangh Parivar.
Kannur University has been fully controlled by Communists, especially the CPI(M). At that time, why did no one speak about politics and ideology in academics and administration?
Criticism only of the Sangh Parivar is not right. There is no need for students to be provoked either. Pradhan is a respected leader who has contributed significantly to Indian education system and there is nothing wrong in thanking him.” he told South First.

CJP Poster
Meanwhile, a poster featuring a cockroach facing a boot has sparked a dispute at MG University, with the administration directing its removal and the University Union refusing to comply.
The poster, used to promote a National Conference scheduled from August 3 to 6 was opposed by the ABVP, following which the Vice-Chancellor ordered its removal.
The VC cited rules against political messaging and unauthorised use of the university’s name.
The Union, however said the artwork was not political and was intended to express solidarity with students who participated in recent protests in New Delhi.
