Synopsis: A 19-year-old woman was allegedly pushed out of a moving Kerala Express near Varkala. The incident occurred in the train’s general compartment while it was heading to Thiruvananthapuram. The woman remains in critical condition.

A 19-year-old woman was allegedly pushed out of a moving Kerala Express near Varkala late on Sunday, 2 November. The incident occurred in the train’s general compartment while it was heading to Thiruvananthapuram.

Sreekutty alias Sonu, the 19-year-old from Peyad in Thiruvananthapuram, remains in critical condition at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital.

Varkala MLA V Joy said that the woman was rescued and brought to Varkala by a MEMU train. As the location was inaccessible to ambulances, the MEMU was stopped to transport the injured woman.

Initial reports suggest a drunk man, Suresh Kumar, a native of Panachamoodu, Vellarada, entered the coach and pushed the woman off the train near Ayanthi. Sreekutty was found unconscious and taken to a private hospital in Varkala.

Railway sources said she had boarded from Aluva. Police have launched an investigation into the incident. The incident took place in the general compartment, contrary to earlier reports claiming it happened in the ladies’ coach.

Sureshkumar was produced at the Fort Taluk Hospital for a medical examination on Sunday night itself.

Another person attacked

Her friend Archana, who was travelling with her, escaped with minor injuries. As the train began moving after a brief halt at Varkala, the two young women went towards the washroom. While Sreekutty stood near the door, Archana went inside.

Moments later, Archana reportedly saw the man kick Sreekutty without provocation, sending her falling out of the moving train.

Archana later told the media that the drunk man tried to push her off the train as well when she raised her voice while he pushed Sona. Both Sona and Archana boarded the train from Aluva and were travelling to Thiruvananthapuram.

A search team found Sreekutty unconscious in a bush near the Ayanthi bridge. The incident occurred around 8.45 pm near Ayani in Varkala, while the duo was returning from Aluva after completing academic work related to Sreekutty’s studies.

Archana said she hung on to the door handle after the man pushed her, and other passengers rescued her after stopping the train by pulling the emergency chain. She added that Kumar attacked Sona without any provocation.

Kumar, reportedly drunk, had boarded the train at Kottayam and was restrained by passengers before being handed over to the Railway Police at Kochuveli.

Meanwhile, Kumar confessed to the police that he pushed Sreekutty since she was blocking the door. He will be produced before the magistrate on Monday afternoon.

Earlier, he had manhandled the police and tried to escape from custody. Reports indicate that he had allegedly tried to pin the blame on a migrant worker.

Doctors said Sreekutty has suffered severe internal bleeding, and her condition remains critical. Police said a team of expert doctors would examine the girl on Monday morning to assess her condition and determine if she requires further medical attention.
