The Kerala SC/ST Commission on Friday, 27 June, has directed the Peroorkada police to register a case and conduct an inquiry against those who falsely accused Bindu, a Dalit woman, in a gold chain theft case.
According to the Assistant Commissioner’s report, Bindu, a poor Dalit woman, was kept in police custody for nearly 20 hours without proper reason. The Commission said this caused her severe mental stress and insult.
The Commission also said Bindu has the right to file a complaint at the Peroorkada police station to seek justice for the trouble she faced.
The SHO of Peroorkada station has been asked to register the case and take further action.
The controversy revolves around Bindu, a domestic worker from Chullimanoor, who was taken into custody on 23 April.
The complaint was originally filed by Omana Daniel, who alleged that Bindu had stolen her chain. However, the chain was later found in Omana’s own house.
Bindu, who was returning home from work in Ambalamukku, was summoned to the Peroorkada station, where she claims she was held for nearly 20 hours.
During her detention, she alleged, she was denied water, not allowed to contact her family, and was threatened with the arrest of her daughters unless she confessed.
Her family was unaware of her detention until the police brought her home later that night.
The next morning, the landlord reportedly acknowledged that the necklace had been found. However, Bindu claims the sub-inspector warned her not to disclose the incident.
Following this an enquiry was conducted by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, District Special Branch.
Based on the enquiry, Inspector General and Commissioner of Police, Thiruvananthapuram City, Thomson Jose suspended a Sub Inspector Prasad SG attached to the Peroorkada Police Station over serious lapses in the investigation of a theft case.
The enquiry looked into allegations concerning the police investigation in a case (Crime Number 571/2025) registered under Section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, in connection with the theft of gold ornaments weighing 18 grams.
The enquiry report revealed that the Investigation Officer, Prasad SG, failed to adhere to procedural formalities after receiving the complaint.
