Synopsis: The UDF and the LDF voted out the NDA president of Kerala’s Narananganam grama panchayat in a no-confidence motion on Thursday by eight votes to six. A fresh election for the panchayat president will be held in 15 days, while Congress Vice-President Jessy Mathew will serve as acting president until then.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) lost control of the Narananganam grama panchayat in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district on Thursday, 6 August, after the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), with the support of the Left Democratic Front (LDF), voted out panchayat president VB Prasad in a no-confidence motion.
The motion, moved by Congress member VP Manoj Kumar, passed with eight votes to six. The 14-member panchayat has six members each from the UDF and the NDA, while the LDF has two members. The Left’s decision to support the UDF thus proved decisive.
The BJP had won the president’s post earlier after the LDF stayed away from the election. With the UDF and the NDA tied at six votes each, the winner was decided by a draw of lots.
A fresh election to elect the panchayat president will be held after 15 days. Until then, Congress Vice-President Jessy Mathew will serve as acting president.
