In a significant move aimed at strengthening its organisational presence in Kerala, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reorganised the state’s 14 revenue districts into 30 new organisational districts.
This restructuring is part of the party’s strategic push to enhance its prospects in the upcoming local and legislative assembly elections.
Under the new structure, each of Kerala’s 140 legislative assembly constituencies will now be further divided into two organisational constituencies, bringing the total number of organisational constituencies in the state to 280. However, the reorganisation does not include the districts of Pathanamthitta, Wayanad, and Kasaragod, which remain unchanged.
The restructuring follows a proposal from the BJP state core committee to reorganise Kerala into 31 districts, based on population, with areas exceeding a million people being considered as a single district. However, the final reorganisation saw 30 districts created.
Despite the changes, there is currently no clarity on whether the existing district secretaries and committees will continue under the new structure. This ambiguity has raised questions within the party on how the leadership at the district level will be managed moving forward.
The restructuring is seen as a key element of the BJP’s efforts to solidify its base in the state and improve its electoral performance.
