Justice Ashish J Desai was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of Kerala High Court on Saturday, 22 July. He succeeds Justice SV Bhatti, who was recently elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court.
Desai was serving as the acting chief justice of the Gujarat High Court.
Justice Desai obtained an undergraduate degree in economics from St. Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad, and a law degree from Sir LA Shah Law College, Ahmedabad.
Initially, he worked at the law office of MC Bhatt and DM Bhatt. He practised law first at City Civil and Sessions Court in Ahmedabad, then at the Gujarat High Court.
He became an additional judge of the High Court of Gujarat in 2011 and was confirmed as a permanent judge in 2013.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal confirmed the appointment through a tweet on Wednesday, 19 July.

In a brief ceremony held at Raj Bhavan, Governor Arif Mohammad Khan administered the oath of office to Desai.
Besides Khan, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Law Minister P Rajeev, Chief Secretary V Venu, and senior IAS and IPS officers were also present at the event.
