Justice Bhuyan and Justice Venkatanarayana Bhatti sworn in as Supreme Court judges

Justice Bhuyan will be a judge of the Supreme Court till 2 August, 2029, and Justice Bhatti's tenure will end on 6 May, 2027.

Justice Ujjal Bhuyan — former Chief Justice of Telangana High Court — and Justice S Venkatanarayana Bhatti — former Chief Justice of Kerala High Court — were sworn in as judges of the Supreme Court on Friday, 14 July.

Justice Bhuyan and Justice Bhatti were administered the oath by the Chief Justice of India, Justice DY Chandrachud. The swearing-in of the two judges took place in the main hall of the Supreme Court in the presence of all other judges.

With the swearing-in of Justice Bhuyan and Justice Bhatti, the strength of the top court judges has gone up to 32, against the sanctioned strength of 34.

President Droupadi Murmu had, on 12 July, appointed both Justice Bhuyan and Justice Bhatti as Supreme Court judges. The Supreme Court collegium, on 5 July, had recommended their elevation to the top court.

With the swearing-in of Justice Bhatti, the Andhra Pradesh High Court will get representation in the top court after August 2022. Andhra Pradesh is the parent High Court of Justice Bhatti.

Justice Bhuyan is senior to Justice Bhatti. Justice Bhuyan was administered the oath first.

Tenures till 2027 and 2029

Justice Bhuyan will be a judge of the Supreme Court till 2 August, 2029, and Justice Bhatti’s tenure will end on 6 May, 2027.

Justice Bhuyan was first appointed as a judge of the Gauhati High Court on 17 October, 2011, and was the seniormost judge of his parent high court. He has also served as a judge of the Bombay High Court. He was appointed the Chief Justice of Telangana High Court on 28 June, 2022.

He is known for his integrity and competence. Justice Bhuyan has dealt with a wide spectrum of cases and has acquired experience in diverse fields of law, with specialisation and domain knowledge in taxation.

Justice Bhatti was appointed as a Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on 12 April 2013. He was transferred to the Kerala High Court in March 2019 and was serving as its Chief Justice since 1 June 2023. He has considerable experience in various branches of the law.

Justice Bhatti was appointed judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on April 12, 2013, and was the seniormost judge of his parent high court — which has had no representation in the top court since August 2022.

The former chief justice of India, Justice NV Ramana, who hailed from Andhra Pradesh High Court, had retired from top court on August 26, 2022.

Justice Bhatti was transferred to Kerala High Court in March 2019 and was serving as its Chief Justice since 1 June this year.

During his long tenure as a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court and subsequently as judge and Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, Justice Bhatti provided value-addition in terms of his acquired knowledge and experience.

Justice Bhatti has considerable experience in various branches of law. The judgements authored by him dealing with issues in various branches of law stand testimony to his legal acumen and competence.
