Synopsis: Ramesh Pisharody, who was made the chairman of the ad hoc committee, stepped down out of respect for the court’s order. Shwetha Menon, who had earlier said she was resigning from the membership of the organisation of Malayalam cine artistes, said a special resolution, moved to dissolve the executive committee that she headed, failed to secure the mandatory two-thirds majority of members present, rendering it invalid.

The Ernakulam Munsiff Court on Friday, 3 July, stayed the functioning of the ad hoc committee constituted by the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (A.M.M.A.), headed by actor-MLA Ramesh Pisharody.

The court issued the stay order after actor Shwetha Menon challenged the formation of the ad hoc committee.

Soon after the court order, Pisharody resigned from the ad hoc committee.

In an interim order, the court held that the ad hoc committee had no legal standing as the AMMA bylaws contained no provision for constituting such a body.

It ruled that the existing executive committee led by Menon would continue to administer the association until further orders and restrained the ad hoc committee from interfering in its functioning.

Menon pointed out an earlier instance in which the executive committee under Mohanlal had resigned but continued in office until a new committee was elected, observing that a similar practice should apply in the present case.

She further argued that the special resolution tabled at the 21 June general body meeting to dissolve the existing executive committee failed to secure the mandatory two-thirds majority of members present, rendering it invalid.

Despite this, the committee was reportedly compelled to step down.

The 21 June general body meeting had witnessed sharp differences, with several members questioning the executive committee’s handling of internal disputes, administrative decisions and financial affairs.

Pisharody steps down

Actor and MLA Ramesh Pisharody resigned from A.M.M.A.’s ad hoc committee “out of respect for the court’s order” that restrained the committee.

Speaking to the media, Pisharody said he had no intention of taking the organisation to court and would fully respect the verdict.

He explained that he had gone through the court order and understood that it held that the ad hoc committee, particularly its convener, had no authority to convene meetings or carry out the committee’s functions.

Since his name figured in the order, he decided to resign, citing moral responsibility.

Pisharody also expressed disappointment over the release of the audio recording of his conversation with A.M.M.A. president Shweta Menon.

He maintained that the conversation was not “leaked” but deliberately released, adding that anyone who listened to the full audio would understand who was behind it.

Recalling the developments at A.M.M.A.’s general body meeting, Pisharody said the entire governing body had announced its resignation.

He said Menon also informed members and the media that she was resigning from A.M.M.A.’s primary membership.

After a brief interval, actor Jagadish was made temporary president, and discussions continued. Pisharody said he had already left the venue when he received a call informing him that an ad hoc committee had been constituted. Believing he could help the organisation during the transition, he agreed to serve on the committee.
