Magadi MLA HC Balakrishna

Magadi MLA HC Balakrishna cautioned people that the Congress’ five guarantees could be scrapped if the party doesn’t win the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

While seeking votes for the incumbent Bengaluru Rural MP DK Suresh ahead of the LS polls, the Congress MLA made this statement during the Janaspandana Programme held at Srigiripura village in Magadi taluka, Ramanagara, on Tuesday, 30 January.

Vote for Congress or no guarantees

Addressing the people in Srigiripura, Balakrishna said, “Is your vote for grains of rice or guarantees? I have spoken to the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister about the guarantees. We are also Hindus and while building temples is good, asking for votes in the name of temples is not. That is our view.”

“If the people ensure Congress’s win (in the Lok Sabha elections), we will continue with our guarantees or else we will have to scrap the guarantees because people have rejected them,” the Congress MLA cautioned.

He further asked, “If temples hold more value for you over the guarantees, then should we scrap them and use that money to build temples, and then ask for votes in the name of temples?”

“I have told the Chief Minister that the people should ensure we win because of the guarantees he has given. Otherwise, we will scrap the guarantees and we will use these funds for development,” added the Magadi MLA.

BY Vijayendra demands apology

Meanwhile, BJP Karnataka unit chief BY Vijayendra came down heavily on the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government over Balakrishna’s remarks.

In his post on X, Vijayendra said, “Modi’s development work, chanting of Shri Ram, the spread of saffron have caused trouble to the Congress, making them lose before they even enter the arena.”

“In the last election, the Congressmen who used to say ‘money for votes’ said it was ‘free guarantees for votes’. Now, they are threatening the voters that they will stop the guarantees if they do not vote. Our voters have the strength to fight back,” the BJP state chief cautioned.

Continuing his attack on the ruling party, Vijayendra said, “It is an unforgivable crime that the Congress thinks that the matured voters of Karnataka are weak-minded and will fall prey to these guarantees by threatening them and insulting the democratic system through one of their MLAs.”

“Congress should issue an unconditional apology to the people immediately,” the BJP state chief demanded.

“Even though the government uses the money collected from people’s taxes for the guarantees, it is unable to adequately deliver on the promises made to the people. Meanwhile, Karnataka’s honour is being damaged by harassing and threatening the beneficiaries,” charged Vijayendra.
