Election Commission announces elections for 56 Rajya Sabha seats on 27 February

The Election Commission (EC), on Monday, 29 January, announced elections for 56 Rajya Sabha seats from 15 states. The election is scheduled to be conducted on 27 February.

Of the retiring members, 10 are from South India — three each in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and four in Karnataka.

Important dates

According to a release issued by the EC, the election notification will be issued on 8 February and the nominations can be made till 15 February.

The nominations will be scrutinised on 16 February and the candidates can withdraw the nominations till 20 February.

The elections will be held from 9 am to 4 pm on 27 February and the votes will be counted at 5 pm on the same day.

The election process will be completed by 29 February.

The EC has also issued guidelines to ensure a smooth conduct of the election process.

“Adequate measures for close monitoring of the election process by appointing observers shall be taken to ensure free and fair election,” it said in the release.
