1. Bandaje Falls Trek

This offbeat trail in the Charmadi Ghat of the Western Ghats is an absolute must-visit location if you are a nature nut who loves trekking.

The trek route will take you through streams, forests, meadows — you name it — giving one’s eyes and mind a welcome change from their bustling life in the city.

“This route keeps changing according to the weather, in my opinion. In summer and the regular season, the forest is more friendly, and you have more time to look around and soak in nature while travelling,” 26-year-old marketing executing Arjun Kelkar from Bengaluru tells South First.

“In the monsoons, it gets trickier, obviously, because the trail becomes more slippery. But to be honest, I love it the best during the monsoons — the more challenging the trail, the better. The trek to the Ballarayana Durga Fort seriously made me question my fitness level!” says Kelkar.

Goes without saying that Bandaje Falls is the highlight of the trek. Get ready to witness the view of a lifetime when you see it fall in its full glory.

“My friends and I stood under the falls taking a ‘natural’ shower for as long as our bodies let us (the pressure of the water is insane!), and it was awesome. If you are squeamish about bugs and worms, I suggest you buckle up because the trail is full of them during the monsoons. Also, the path has some tricky areas, particularly the steeper sections, so be careful of those,” Kelkar adds.

Trek Duration: A day (approximately).

Best Time: November to March.

Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate.

Located in the Shivamogga district in the Malenadu region of Karnataka, Agumbe beckons those who crave a momentary break from their chaotic lives and to take a breather with the simple life.

Agumbe is a Unesco World Heritage Site for a reason, as the biodiversity in this quaint village and the areas surrounding it is unparalleled, making the evergreen rainforest a haven for nature lovers. And if you are also a wildlife photographer, you are in for a treat.

The trail offers trekkers chances to spot a plethora of wild animals, explore ancient forts, splash in the natural streams, take a breather by gorgeous waterfalls and, of course, soak in nature at the very heart of the rainforest.

Watch out for snakes though, especially the king cobra, which is Agumbe’s flagship species, and is known to make random appearances.

Trek Duration: 4-7 hours (approximately).

3. Kumara Parvatha Trek

On the trail, you will pass through the Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, which will take you through forests, streams, grasslands, a magnificent waterfall, and even volcanic rocks.

“I have been trekking for almost five years and this has to be my favourite trail whenever I feel the need for an adrenaline-filled route,” 29-year-old software engineer Harish Gowda tells South First.

But, there is a rider.

“I do not believe this trail is for everyone, especially newbies, because it needs major caution. There is a drop of about 2,000 feet at one point and the slippery areas make things more difficult. There are also some very steep sections of grasslands and forests where you need to walk with absolute focus unless you want to go tumbling downhill.

“But if you can overcome these obstacles, I assure you the view from the top will knock the wind out of you,” Gowda adds.

A long trail of almost 24 km, this route requires a fair amount of planning. Gowda suggests that trekkers start early morning and spread the trek over two days.

Trek Duration: 8-10 hours (approximately).

Best Time: October to January, June to September.

Difficulty Level: Moderate to difficult.
