Five people, including three nursing students, were killed and at least 15 others injured after a private bus travelling from Goa to Bengaluru overturned into a roadside drain near Aymangala in Hiriyur taluk of Chitradurga district on Friday, 21 August morning.

The deceased were three students, the bus driver and the cleaner.

The bus was carrying a group of tourists from a private nursing college in Arekere, Bengaluru. The group comprised 49 students, two teaching staff members, a non-teaching staff member, a parent and a travel agent. They had left for Goa on August 16 and were returning to Bengaluru after the trip.

According to preliminary reports, the driver lost control of the bus before it veered off the road, plunged into the roadside drain and overturned.

Local residents and emergency personnel rescued passengers trapped inside the vehicle. At least 15 passengers were injured. The police are investigating the cause of the accident.
