Students of Presidency University at Ittagallpura in the Bengaluru district of Karnataka, were in for a rude shock on Monday, 2 January, when an outsider entered their college premises and stabbed a 19-year-old girl multiple times, killing her.

The assailant later stabbed himself in the chest and attempted suicide, the police said.

The deceased, a first-year BTech student, has been identified as Layasmitha, a native of the Mulbagal taluk in the Kolar district of Karnataka.

She was staying at a government hostel nearby, the police said.

The assailant, identified as Pavan Kalyan (21), is also a native of Mulbagal and a second-year BCA student at Nrupathunga University.

He is currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Bowring Hospital in Bengaluru, and is in critical condition.

The incident

According to the police, the incident occurred between 1:30 pm and 2 pm in the corridor along the BTech classrooms of the college.

Kalyan had come prepared with a knife in his bag. He approached Layasmitha in the corridor outside her classroom and stabbed her in the neck.

He then stab her several times in the abdomen. Following this, he stabbed himself in the chest.

The students who witnessed the incident were unable to intervene, fearing that Kalyan would stab them as well.

When the security guards rushed to the spot, they find the two lying in a pool of blood. The other students were ushered away.

The college management immediately informed the police, who shifted both to the hospital.

While the girl was declared dead on arrival, her assailant was shifted to Bowring Hospital in critical condition.

Layasmitha spurned Kalyan

Preliminary investigations revealed that Layasmitha and Kalyan were distant relatives on her father’s side, the police said.

Still in a state of shock, Layasmitha’s mother Rajeshwari told the police that her daughter had told her she blocked Kalyan’s number on her phone recently.

The principal of Nrupathunga University told the police that Kalyan had not turned up to the college on Saturday and Monday.

The police also hinted that Layasmitha rejected Kaylan’s proposal. They suspect that this spurred Kalyan to kill her after the New Year.

The Rajanukunte police, who termed the incident “pre-planned”, have filed a case of murder and an attempt to suicide, and are awaiting Kalyan’s recovery in order to record his statement and proceed with the legal formalities.
