The Karnataka government, on Saturday, 27 April, constituted a special investigative team to probe allegations of sexual abuse against Hassan MP and JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna.

The government’s decision came on heels of a letter Karnataka State Commission for Women’s Chairperson Dr Nagalakshmi Chaudhary had written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, requesting a detailed probe into the matter.

On 24 April, unidentified people leaked hundreds of private videos of Prajwal, hailing from an influential political family in Karnataka.

A day after the videos were leaked, the Women’s Commission wrote to the chief minister and Director General of Police Alok Mohan.

The panel demanded a detailed investigation against the politician for allegedly sexually assaulting hundreds of women and the person(s) who had leaked the videos.

Prajwal is the NDA candidate in Hassan, where polling was held on Friday, 26 April.

“With regard to the Prajwal Revanna’s video case, the government has decided to set up an SIT,” the order issued by the chief minister’s office said.

“Prima facie, obscene videos are making the rounds in Hassan and it appears that several women have been sexually assaulted,” it said.

“The Women’s Commission had wrote a letter demanding the setting up of an SIT for a detailed probe. Hence, the government has decided to constitute an SIT. Amidst this, the police have provided the information about Prajwal Revanna flying abroad,” the chief minister’s office said.

Morphed videos, says Prajwal’s camp

Two days before the Women’s Commission wrote to the chief minister, Prajwal’s polling agent complained to the Cyber Police, saying morphed videos and pictures of the JD(S) leader were being circulated.

None of the women seen in the video had complained against the MP.

The Women’s Commission said in its letter that “Reports of sexual violence against women are being published in mass media.”

Chairperson Choudhary added that a USB drive was being circulated in Hassan district and thousands of innocent girls were being used for performing sexual acts, with private videos being circulated on mobile phones to blackmail them.

Polling agent names suspect

“We have not filed any police complaint. We requested the Hassan SP to meet the victims and conduct a detailed probe into the politician and the person(s) who leaked these videos,” the chairperson added.

In his complaint, Prajwal’s polling agent Poornachandra Thejaswi alleged that ahead of the polling of the second phase for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on Friday, one Naveen and others morphed photos and videos of Hassan Lok Sabha seat’s NDA nominee.

“These accused are going door-to-door showing these obscene photos and videos, and provoking people not to vote for Prajwal in the Lok Sabha elections,” he alleged.

Prajwal is the son of former minister HD Revanna, and grandson of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda.
