Siddaramaiah bids farewell to cabinet; ‘blesses’ DK Shivakumar

Synopsis: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a breakfast meeting with his cabinet colleagues on Thursday ahead of his expected resignation later in the day. Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot’s unexpected departure to his native Indore late on Wednesday night, amid reports of a family emergency, is unlikely to alter Siddaramaiah’s plans.

The 77-year-old had earlier been asked by the Congress high command to step down to make way for the younger generation and instead take up a Rajya Sabha seat.

Home Minister G Parameshwara, speaking to PTI ahead of the meeting, said the Chief Minister wanted to “thank all ministers before submitting his resignation.” Images from the meeting showed Siddaramaiah seated beside his deputy and widely touted successor, DK Shivakumar.

Photos from the meeting shows Siddaramaiah giving his blessings to DK Shivakumar while the latter touched his feet. The photo is meant to be seen as Siddaramaiah’s “endorsement” of DK Shivakumar and a sign of smooth transition sans animosity as per the AICC’s wishes.

The Chief Minister’s office had earlier confirmed to South First that the veteran Congress leader would tender his resignation on Thursday, with the development expected to follow the breakfast meeting around 11 am.

However, the unexpected absence of Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot had added to uncertainty over whether Siddaramaiah will be able to tender his resignation on Thursday. CMO officials have once again insisted that Siddaramaiah will proceed with his plans. The letter is expected to be sent to the Governor’s office.

The governor left Bengaluru at 11 pm on Wednesday on an Air India flight and stayed at the Lok Bhavan in Mumbai on Wednesday night. He is subsequently expected to arrive at his residence in Indore on Thursday. Several unconfirmed reports suggested the governor had left due to a “family emergency.”
