The Karnataka Police filed an FIR and arrested a Sanskrit school teacher after a video of the teacher assaulting a student went viral on social media platforms.
The incident took place at a Sanskrit Veda School run by the Sri Guru Thipperudraswamy Temple in Nayakanahatti in the Chitradurga district.
After the video had gone viral, a case was registered at the Nayakanahatti Police Station. However, soon after the FIR was filed, the accused teacher, Veeresh Hiremath, went into hiding. However, the police traced him to Kalaburagi and arrested him.
Reports indicate that the student left the school after the assault and is continuing his studies in his hometown.
The school is a residential institution affiliated with Sri Guru Thipperudraswamy Temple. The complaint was filed by Gangadharappa, the Executive Officer of the temple.
The incident reportedly took place in February this year, but the video went viral recently.
Chitradurga Superintendent of Police (SP) Ranjith Kumar said, “The teacher has been arrested in Kalaburagi. A complaint was filed after the video went viral. Veeresh will be produced in court. Further details will be shared after the investigation.”
After receiving the complaint, the Nayakanahatti police filed an FIR, visited the spot and initiated an investigation into the incident. According to the complaint filed by Gangadharappa, the assault took place because the Veda student contacted his parents over the phone.
In the video, it can be seen that Veeresh Hiramet, also the head teacher, was kicking, slapping, and brutally beating the student of Nayakanahatti Sanskrit Veda School. It further showed that even after the boy’s hands were injured, the teacher continued to kick and thrash him mercilessly.
The teacher, who was appointed by the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department, has since been suspended from service.
Meanwhile, Additional Deputy Commissioner BT Kumaraswamy told The New Indian Express that the temple executive officer did not inform the district administration of the incident and was lax in performing his duties. A show-cause notice has been issued to him, the DC said.
It is also said that the number of students at the institution dropped to four from 30 during the time of the assault.
