Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah PM Modi Sanathan Dharma

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to withdraw his statement to “give a befitting reply” to Tamil Nadu Youth Welfare and Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s recent remarks on Sanatana Dharma.

In a series of tweets on X on Thursday, 7 September, Siddaramaiah said any individual found guilty of wrongdoing must face appropriate legal consequences. “Encouraging citizens to take matters into their own hands, as implied by the prime minister’s statement, runs counter to the principles of law and order, the chief minister opined.

Continuing the tirade against Modi, he further said the prime minister was not just the leader of the BJP, but he was also occupying a constitutional post. “He must adhere to the dignity and responsibilities of that position (office of the prime minister) in accordance with Rajadharama.”

Invoking Vajpayee

Siddaramaiah made the remark in a direct reference to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee asking Modi, then the chief minister of Gujarat, to follow Rajadharama, during the 2002 riots.

“Given the past conduct of the PM Modi, his current statements are not surprising. The then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee himself had expressed displeasure over Narendra Modi’s conduct during the Gujarat riots.”

“He (Vajpayee) had urged him (Modi) to follow Rajadharma. I would like to remind Modi of the late Vajpayee’s words of wisdom,” the chief minister said.

Taking a swipe at the prime minister, Siddaramaiah said Modi was still in his RSS shelter. “He seems to have forgotten that he is the prime minister of 1.4 billion people of this country,” the Congress leader continued.

“It is a worrisome development that many leaders of his party are calling for violence, provoked by the prime minister’s statements,” he expressed concern.

Modi’s call

Addressing a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, 6 September, Modi urged the ministers to give a befitting reply to Udayanidhi Stalin, DMK leader and son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. The Cabinet meeting was held ahead of the G20 Summit in New Delhi.

Last weekend, actor-turned-politician Udhayanidhi Stalin made a statement on 2 September that sparked a controversy. He likened Sanatana Dharma to diseases like malaria, dengue, and Covid-19, and suggested that it should be eradicated rather than opposed.

The remark led to a backlash on social media, with the BJP asserting that it could be construed as a call for genocide. Udhyanidhi Stalin, however, denied any such intention and added that he was ready to face any legal consequence.
