Nearly two weeks after the alleged assault of a woman sub-inspector by the daughter of a BJP MLA in Karnataka, newly emerged CCTV footage seems to confirm the allegations, even as the police are yet to make any arrests.
Aishwarya, daughter of Tumakuru Rural BJP MLA B Suresh Gowda, was booked by the Kyathanahalli police for allegedly slapping woman PSI Savitha B Patil during an altercation at the Arathi Ukkada temple in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya district on August 12.
The incident occurred around 8.15 pm during Bhima Amavasya celebrations, when the temple was crowded with devotees. Savitha, attached to the Mandya Women’s Police Station, had been deployed for crowd management and security.
According to the PSI’s complaint, Aishwarya sought entry towards the sanctum but was asked to wait because of the heavy rush. A dispute allegedly broke out after Aishwarya questioned why a Circle Inspector, who was on duty in plain clothes, had been allowed inside.
Savitha alleged that Aishwarya, who is also the wife of police officer Gautham, verbally abused her before slapping her while she was in uniform. She also alleged that Aishwarya threatened her with consequences for her career.
The newly surfaced CCTV footage shows Aishwarya arguing with the PSI and slapping her on the head/face. Savitha is then seen striking Aishwarya back before others intervene.
Kyathanahalli Police registered an FIR against Aishwarya under BNS Sections 132, 115(2), 352 and 351(2), including provisions relating to assault/use of criminal force against a public servant, causing hurt, intentional insult and criminal intimidation.
Mandya SP Mallikarjun Baladandi has said Aishwarya has also filed a counter-complaint alleging that the PSI abused her, and police are investigating both complaints.
MLA Suresh Gowda has apologised for his daughter’s conduct and sought a departmental inquiry into the incident.
As of Tuesday morning, no arrest of Aishwarya has been reported despite the FIR, prompting questions on social media over the police response.
