Synopsis: Lokayukta arrested KUWS&DB Executive Engineer Ashok Shiroor in Belagavi for accepting a ₹1 lakh bribe from a farmer to release ₹18 lakh land compensation for a Raibag drinking water project. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered.
The Lokayukta officers set a trap and caught senior engineer working with the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWS&DB) accepting a ₹1 lakh bribe, reported The Hindu.
Farmer Yasin Pendhari from Khemlapur village, Belagavi district, complained to the Lokayukta that Executive Engineer Ashok Shiroor demanded ₹1 lakh to release ₹18 lakh in land acquisition compensation.
Pendhari’s land had been acquired by KUWS&DB for a drinking water scheme in Raibag taluk.
Led by police inspectors Niranjan Patil and Govindgouda Patil, a team raided the KUWS&DB office and arrested the accused in the act of receiving the money.
A case has been filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act and related statutes, stated Superintendent of Police Hanumantaraya S in a release.
