Deceased Anitha and her daughter Dhanushri in Hunsur

A 45-year-old woman died while trying to rescue — albeit in vain — her daughter who was pushed into a lake by her son near Marur in Hunsur taluk in the Mysuru district of Karnataka.

The police have arrested the accused, 23-year-old Nitheesh, who shoved his sister for being in a relationship with a man from another community in their village.

The deceased have been identified as Anitha, a homemaker, and her daughter 21-year-old Dhanushri, a second-year BCom student of the Devraj Urs Government College in Hunsur.

The alleged incident happened around 8.45 pm on Tuesday, 23 January.

Nitheesh reportedly told his mother that one of his uncles had taken ill, and they had to visit him. He took Anitha and Dhanushri on his two-wheeler, and on the way stopped the vehicle near a lake and picked up a quarrel with his sister over her alleged relationship.

Dhanushri reportedly told Nitheesh not to interfere in her life. Enraged, he dragged her and pushed the young woman into the lake. Anitha, who was trying to mediate between the siblings, jumped into the water but both the women drowned.

Nitheesh confessed to father

When Nitheesh returned home alone, his father Satheesh questioned him. After he confessed to the crime, the father reported the matter to the Hunsur police station early on Wednesday.

Police Sub-Inspector Ramachandrappa informed the fire and rescue personnel, who fished out the bodies.

“Based on Sathish’s complaint, we have booked Nitheesh for murdering his sister Dhanushri and also for culpable homicide not amounting to murder of his mother Anitha and have arrested him,” the officer said.

The police said Dhanushri was in a relationship with a Muslim youth for the past seven months. Though her family objected to the relationship and even threatened to force her to discontinue her studies, she continued the affair.

Nitheesh, the police said, decided to put an end to the relationship since his sister did not listen to the family. The accused was unemployed.
