Karnataka Lokayukta arrests MESCOM engineer for taking Rs 40,000 bribe

Synopsis: Karnataka Lokayukta Police arrested Mescom junior engineer Mallikarjunaswamy on 4 November in Chikkamagaluru for demanding a ₹40,000 bribe to clear a contractor’s ₹10 lakh pending bill for year-old civil works. Frustrated by the delay, the contractor complained, leading to a trap at the RG Road office where he was caught red-handed.

Karnataka Lokayukta Police on Tuesday, 4 November, nabbed a Mescom junior engineer in Chikkamagaluru for allegedly taking a bribe of ₹40,000 to release a contractor’s outstanding bill.

According to a Deccan Herald report, the accused, Mallikarjunaswamy, had demanded the bribe from a civil contractor to expedite payment of a pending bill amounting to ₹10 lakh for completed civil works.

Despite the work having been finished nearly a year earlier, the contractor’s bill remained unpaid.

Exasperated by the delay and the bribe demand, the contractor filed a complaint with the Lokayukta. The probe team caught Mallikarjunaswamy red-handed accepting the bribe at the Mescom office in RG Road.
