IPS Roopa spat with IAS Rohini

Two days after a full-blown public spat between IPS officer Roopa D Moudgil and IAS officer Rohini Sindhuri, the Karnataka government has transferred both.

Roopa Moudgil, who held the post of managing director, Karnataka State Handicrafts Development Corporation, and Rohini Sindhuri, who held the post of commissioner for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (Muzrai), have been transferred without posting.

Transfers without postings

In an order issued on Tuesday, 21 February, James Tharakan, under secretary in the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR), sanctioned the transfer of five officers, including Rohini Sindhuri and Roopa Moudgil.

Munish Moudgil, a senior IAS officer and husband of Roopa Moudgil, has also been transferred and posted as principal secretary, DPAR.

The move to transfer officers comes in the backdrop of a very public spat between Roopa Moudgil and Rohini Sindhuri which landed at the chief secretary’s office on Monday.

The IPS officer had accused the IAS officer of professional and personal misconduct.

Both officers have been issued warnings by the state government to refrain from making any further personal remarks on social media.

The public spat between the officers had landed the Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government in Karnataka in embarrassment.

Rohini Sindhuri’s husband, Sudhir Reddy, has also filed a criminal complaint against IPS officer Roopa, accusing her of defaming Sindhuri.

The allegations

While Roopa has been accusing Rohini of indulging in malpractice and irregularities for over 20 days, the issue grabbed eyeballs on Sunday when she took to social media and posted pictures of Rohini Sindhuri, alleging that the latter had shared them with multiple male IAS officers, and questioning her intent.

Along with the photos, Roopa had also levelled allegations of irregularities, corruption and misuse of office against the IAS officer.

Sindhuri has vehemently denied the allegations. Terming them baseless, Sindhuri in turn contended that Roopa, who holds a responsible position, was making such comments against her out of “personal hatred”.

Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra on Monday expressed displeasure over the two officials indulging in a public spat, and warned of action citing service conduct rule violations.

While deeming it a “personal issue”, the home minister seemed to brush aside the more serious allegations.

Other transfers

After coming under severe fire for failure of administration in the state with senior officers sparring in public, the Bommai government has moved to initiate action.

The transfer is likely to be the first step towards that end.

Other transfers in the order include Basavarajendra H replacing Rohini Sindhuri as commissioner for Muzrai department and Bharathi D replacing Roopa D as managing director of Handicrafts Development Corporation.

Darshan HV has been appointed as commissioner for Tumakuru Minicipal corporation and CN Sreedhara has replaced Munish Moudgil as commissioner, Survey Settlements and Land Records.
