Harohalli under consideration as preferred site for Bengaluru’s second greenfield airport
The project is expected to be completed by 2032-33, in line with the expiry of the 150-km restriction on establishing new international airports within the vicinity of Kempegowda International Airport.
Synopsis: Harohalli, located about 40 km from Bengaluru, has emerged as the leading contender for the city’s proposed second greenfield airport, with the final decision set to follow a feasibility assessment. The project is expected to be completed by 2032-33, with the State government prioritising low land acquisition costs and technically suitable terrain when selecting the site.
Harohalli on Kanakapura Road has emerged as the leading contender for Bengaluru’s proposed second greenfield airport, with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar saying on Wednesday that the State government was considering the site.
Located about 40 km from the city centre, it falls within DK Shivakumar’s Assembly constituency of Kanakapura.
At a meeting with Infrastructure Minister MB Patil and senior officials on 8 July, DK Shivakumar reiterated the government’s priorities for selecting the site, such as low land acquisition costs, technically feasible terrain, minimal displacement and avoiding the relocation of entire villages.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, DK Shivakumar said, “I have asked officials to identify locations where land prices are low so that it does not burden the government.”
The final site, however, would be selected only after a feasibility assessment is conducted, according to Infrastructure Minister MB Patil.
The project is expected to be completed by 2032-33, in line with the expiry of the 150-km restriction on establishing new international airports within the vicinity of Kempegowda International Airport.
It is expected to span about 9,000 acres, significantly exceeding the AAI’s estimated minimum requirement of 4,500 acres, allowing room for future expansion, cargo hubs and multiple runways.
The State government has been scouting for suitable land since mid-2024, narrowing the list of potential sites from seven to four.
Harohalli is among the shortlisted locations, along with the Somanahalli-Chudahalli belt on Kanakapura Road in south Bengaluru and the Kunigal-Nelamangala stretch near Tumakuru Road to the west.
Officials said a feasibility report would be prepared with technical inputs from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) before being submitted to the Union government.
