The Congress government on Friday, 10 October, mandated that Information Technology (IT) and Biotechnology (BT) companies, factories and private institutions in Bengaluru should celebrate Karnataka Rajyotasava on 1 November.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar told reporters: “All schools, colleges, IT and BT companies, factories, and other private institutions within Bengaluru city must celebrate Karnataka Rajyotsava on 1 November by hoisting the Kannada flag.”
The state was formed as the Mysore state on 1 November, 1956 and was renamed Karnataka in 1973. It should be noted that Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu were also formed on the same day
Shivakumar said people in the state, especially “outsiders” should be given the opportunity to know and adapt to the culture of the state.
“To convey the importance of the Kannada language to the next generation, programs should be organised in government and private schools. In addition to this, cultural programs should be held,” he said.
“In Bengaluru, about 50 percent of the population is from outside the state. They must be given the opportunity to learn Kannada. In this regard, I am announcing this decision on the occasion of Vijayadashami,” the deputy chief minister added.
“Even if IT, BT companies, and factories do not organise cultural programs, they must hoist the Kannada flag and celebrate Rajyotsava. Institutions and companies celebrating Rajyotsava must send photos through WhatsApp to a phone number provided by BBMP,” Shivakumar said.
“This time, the 70th Kannada Rajyotsava will be celebrated across the state. It is everyone’s duty to learn Kannada while living in the land of Kannada. As the Minister in charge of Bengaluru Urban District, I am making this announcement,” he added.
Meanwhile, on social media, Karnataka natives welcomed the move while non-natives expressed displeasure.
“This is good initiative @DKShivakumar avare, but this is not enough, you have make sure all District incharge ministers hoist a Kannada Flag in all the government events held in District Head quarters on 1st November on the occasionof Karnataka Rajyotsava day, it’s the most special and emotional day for people of Karnataka,” one X user wrote.

“Is this not parochialism? Why do you need a Kannada flag?” questioned an X user.
