HD Kumaraswamy

Former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy was admitted to Apollo Speciality Hospital in Jayanagar in Bengaluru in the early hours of Wednesday, 30 August, after he experienced weakness and discomfort.

He is being treated by neurologist Dr P Satishchandra and his team, according to a release by the hospital.

Meanwhile, his wife Anita Kumaraswamy told reporters that the JD(S) leader had a cold and cough and was running a temperature.

“His fever had gone up and was feeling extreme weakness in his arms and could not speak properly. So we brought him to Apollo Hospital for treatment and he is now recovered very well,” she added.

“Doctors have told us that they might discharge him on Friday,” said Anita.

Apollo Hospital doctors confirmed as much, but did not give a timeframe for his discharge.

Several symptoms

Kumaraswamy was admitted to the hospital at 3.40 am on Wednesday.

Initially, sources said his symptoms included weakness of the upper limb, which raised concerns about potential complications that could affect his arm’s motor functions.

According to the hospital, its medical team acted swiftly, initiating an immediate evaluation of his condition, to which he responded quickly.

Speaking to South First, one of the senior doctors from the hospital said, “He had a mild stroke of the upper limb area and complained of severe weakness. He has responded to the treatment well and is recovering.”

A statement from the hospital’s Vice President and Unit Head Dr Govindaiah Yatheesh stated: “Currently, he is haemodynamically stable, comfortable and coherent and has been kept under closed observation.”

The hospital authorities said their team of healthcare professionals were working around the clock to monitor his progress and ensure his well-being.

Upper limb weakness, a symptom that Kumaraswamy experienced, could be caused by a variety of factors, ranging from neurological issues to muscular problems.

The evening bulletin

Apollo Hospital doctors said in the evening that Kumaraswamy was brought in with reduced blood flow to the limb area, causing weakness in arms, and the slurring of speech.

A senior consultant neurologist at Apollo Hospital confirmed to reporters reporters on Friday evening that Kumaraswamy had come in around 3 am complaining of slurred speech and weakness in his hands.

He was immediately shifted to the ICU and treated for the symptoms, said the doctor, adding that the former Karnataka chief minister had been brought to the hospital “in the window period”.

“He has now recovered completely. He will be under observation for 24 hours in the ICU and will be moved to the ward tomorrow, being discharged after he is completely right,” said the doctor.
