DK Shivakumar warns Bengaluru IT firms of action over alleged bias against Kannadigas

“It is disheartening to hear complaints that Kannadigas are being denied job opportunities in Bengaluru's IT companies. The government has taken seriously the issue of native Kannada speakers being sidelined,” Shivakumar said in a post on X.

Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday, 25 October, said the government would take action against private institutions that deliberately sideline Kannadigas, after a social media video alleging discrimination against Kannada-speaking jobseekers in Bengaluru’s IT sector went viral.

“It is disheartening to hear complaints that Kannadigas are being denied job opportunities in Bengaluru’s IT companies. The government has taken seriously the issue of native Kannada speakers being sidelined,” Shivakumar said in a post on X.

“In Karnataka, the Kannadiga is sovereign. The government will not allow the rights, dignity, and opportunities of Kannadigas to be disregarded for any reason,” he said, adding that the state took pride in Bengaluru’s position as India’s technology capital and the capabilities of its local talent.

“If it is found that any private institution has deliberately sidelined Kannadigas, the government will take appropriate action,” he added.

Allegations of discrimination

The response follows an October 24 video by a Kannada-speaking woman that went viral. She alleged that candidates listing Kannada as their mother tongue on their resumes were being rejected during job interviews.

“Out of 100 people in a company, only three or four are Kannadigas,” she claimed, alleging that companies were conducting campus recruitment drives in other states and bringing candidates to Bengaluru because they were willing to work for lower salaries.

“Are they bringing very talented people from there? No, they are just students who have passed. They may not even know English, but companies bring them here and train them because they are willing to work for lower salaries,” the woman alleged.

She further claimed that team leaders recruited people from their own communities, saying: “If there is one team leader, that is enough. They fill the entire company with people from their own community.”

Our honourable CM DK sir, you are planning the Bidadi township to increase employment opportunities for our people. But in a situation like this, whatever you do will not work. I request you to please provide us with a solution.”
