Three people from Assam have been arrested over the explosion at an under-construction building in Bengaluru’s Pulakeshinagar on October 20, which left two workers injured.

According to a press release issued by the Office of the Bengaluru City Commissioner, the explosion was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) concealed inside a torch battery. Police said the three accused had conspired and executed the blast over personal enmity with one of the injured.

The East Division Police had formed ten special teams to investigate the case amid speculations of a terror angle. Investigators examined more than 1,500 CCTV cameras and questioned over 100 people, following which two people were apprehended in Bengaluru, while another accused was apprehended in Maski, Raichur district, and taken into custody for interrogation.

According to police, during the interrogation of the accused, it was revealed that they were childhood friends and one of them was related to the injured worker. All four of them belonged to the Dhinanathpur village in Assam. Police said the three accused had created a WhatsApp group to conspire and share information regarding the crime.

“It was revealed that the prime accused and the injured person from Assam were related to each other as cousins. Owing to enmity arising from a land dispute and financial dispute in their native village, as well as an issue concerning the cancellation of the accused’s sister’s marriage, the prime accused allegedly conspired in advance with the other two accused with the intention of murdering the injured person,” police said in the statement.

Investigators also found that the accused manufactured the IED by themselves after purchasing raw materials locally and using the help of online web applications. The accused then allegedly placed the device in a parcel and left it at a shop for the worker to collect it.

“The accused subsequently pressured him over the phone to open the parcel. When the parcel was opened by a co-worker who was working with him, the device exploded,” police said.

The injured worker is still undergoing treatment at the hospital, police said.

The second person injured in the incident, reportedly a security guard at the building, was discharged earlier.

Further investigation is underway.
