Synopsis: The Karnataka government has raised the sales tax on diesel from 18.4 percent to 21.7 percent, increasing the price to ₹91.02 per litre. This move follows earlier fuel tax hikes and price increases across other essential commodities and services.
The Karnataka government has increased the sales tax on diesel by three percent, effective immediately. Diesel has now become dearer by Rs 2 per litre and it is expected to impact all related-commercial activities.
The tax has risen from 18.4 percent to 21.7 percent, pushing the current diesel price of ₹88.99 per litre to ₹91.02. Petrol is priced at ₹102.92 per litre.
“Despite the increase, diesel remains cheaper in Karnataka compared with neighbouring states, where prices stand at ₹94.42 per litre in Tamil Nadu, ₹95.66 in Kerala, ₹97.35 in Andhra Pradesh and ₹95.70 in Telangana,” read a statement from the government on the price hike.
In June 2024, the state had raised the sales tax on petrol from 25.92 percent to 29.84 percent, leading to a ₹3 per litre increase.
Similarly, a previous hike in diesel tax from 14.3 percent to 18.4 percent had resulted in a ₹3 per litre rise.
The price hike follows a string of hikes over other commodities and services in recent months, including milk, water, electricity, metro fares and bus fares.
The ruling Congress government has faced sharp criticism from the opposition over the hikes.
