Bengaluru woman dies of mercury poisoning, names husband, father-in-law before death

Vidya died nine months after she had been allegedly injected with mercury.

Synopsis: Vidya said her husband and father-in-law injected her with a substance, which was later found to be mercury. In her dying declaration, the mother of a child said she had been subjected to inhuman treatment at her husband’s house.

Bengaluru police have registered a murder case after a woman, who suffered for nine months, died of alleged mercury poisoning while undergoing treatment in a city hospital.

Before her death, Vidya told the police that her husband, Basavaraju, and her father-in-law Mariswamachari had injected her with something on the night of 26 February, which made her unconscious.

On regaining consciousness the next evening, she found an injection mark on her thigh. She visited the Attibele hospital, where the doctors referred her to the Oxford Hospital, and the presence of mercury was found in her body. She underwent treatment, including a surgery, at Oxford for a month.

The woman, mother of a four-year-old, was later shifted to the Victoria Hospital. Doctors confirmed that mercury had spread all over body, affecting her vital organs, especially the kidneys. Police took her statement over video conferencing. Vidya died of multiple organ failure on Monday, 24 February.

Police have registered a case and were awaiting a forensic report.

According to reports, Vidya narrated a series of harassment by her husband and father-in-law in her dying declaration. The woman said she had been branded as “mad” and forcefully kept confined to their house. She was prohibited from meeting her relatives and was verbally abused.
