Synopsis: A habitual thief went on a slashing spree in Bengaluru’s Indiranagar, causing rumours of a serial killer on the prowl in the locality. The police identified the man, and are searching for him.
A rowdy sheeter who went on a knifing spree in Bengaluru’s Indiranagar sparked panic as the incident triggered fake news of a potential serial killer on the prowl in the city.
The police on Monday, 10 February, debunked rumours of the serial killer on the loose, identified the rowdy sheeter as Kadamba of Jogupalya, and said a manhunt has been launched to nab him.
A reportedly drunk Kadamba, after an argument with his family, left his house on the night of Saturday, 8 February, and first attacked a pani puri vendor following a verbal duel.
He then stabbed three others who tried to intervene. Later, he slashed a biker’s neck for not taking a turn as per his demand.
A police chase ensued, during which he attacked a security guard inside a building before escaping towards Hoskote. The injuries caused were minor and not life threatening.
Kadamba, a habitual mobile phone thief, was previously under a rowdy sheet and released on a ₹1 lakh good behaviour bond.
On Sunday, a piece of fake news was circulated on social media, warning the public against the possible serial killer, and asking them to be alert.
However, the Indiranagar police identified the criminal after checking CCTV visuals.
DCP East D Devaraja speaking to South First debunked the fake news of a potential serial killer and warned of action against those spreading panic.
The police have registered five cases and intensified the search for Kadamba.
Similar rumour about a serial killer was circulated in Bengaluru after the bodies of three women were found in a sack and two drums in railways property between December 2022 and March 2023.
The railway police later said no serial killer or gang was involved in the incidents.
