Arrest

The IS Sadan Police in the Santoshnagar Division of the South East Zone of Hyderabad said on Friday, 22 December, that they had apprehended eight people, including a minor, in connection with the murder of Mohd Thariq Ali on Tuesday.

Of the eight people in police custody, businessman Mohd Mazhar (24), bike-taxi driver Shaik Muzammil (21), AC technician Kaleem Khan (23), driver Mohd Afroz Siddiqui (30), plumber Khaled Osman Ansari (21), and general stores employee Mohd Amer (20) were arrested on Thursday, said the police.

Their interrogation led the cops to Abdul Amer (23), an attender at the local Government Urdu Primary School, and the juvenile accused. Both were arrested on Friday, said the police.

They added that they had seized four knives, three Honda Activa scooters, and five mobile phones from the accused.

The arrests took place in the Shah Dargah and Santoshnagar areas, and the accused voluntarily confessed to the crime, said the police.

The victim, Mohd Thariq Ali (39), was a real estate professional. He was killed early on Tuesday in front of his home in Ram Chandra Nagar in the Edi Bazar area of Hyderabad.

The arrested people attacked him using deadly weapons, with the motive behind the murder being a previous dispute, according to the police.

Abdul Amer helped the other accused burn their clothes to destroy evidence, said the cops.

The dispute

All eight accused were said to be residing close to where Thariq lived.

Mohd Mazhar (accused number 1, or A1) and his associates used to run an illegal rice trade, said the police.

They would purchase ration-shop rice — which the government provides to the public at subsidised rates — from beneficiaries and sell it at higher rates, explained the cops.

In October, Mohd Mazhar, Shaik Muzammil, Kaleem Khan, and Mohd Afroz Siddiqui — along with one person named Arif and his associates — went to Sama Bar and Restaurant at Karmanghat, wherein they consumed alcohol, said the cops.

Heated arguments arose between the four and Arif, and Mazhar attacked him with a bottle, causing him injuries, they added.

Thariq Ali was informed of this incident, and he intervened, assuring the quartet that he would mediate the issue with Arif and help reach a settlement, said the police, adding that the settlement amount was fixed at ₹2 lakh.

They added that although Thariq received the amount from Mazhar, he did not give it to Arif as per their settlement agreement, and neither did he return the amount to Mazhar.

When the group approached Thariq to get back the amount, he allegedly started harassing them and demanding ₹1 lakh every month.

He apparently said he would otherwise complain about them to the appropriate authorities regarding their illegal rice business.

That was when the accused decided to kill Thariq, accordingly hatched a plan, and put it into action.

Taking advantage of Thariq sitting alone on his scooter in front of his house, the accused allegedly stabbed him to death around 3 am on Tuesday.
