Synopsis: The new pickup rules, which were enforced on 13 December at Terminal 1, stated that commercial vehicles must wait at designated parking zones, P3 and P4, where they will get 10 minutes of complimentary parking. Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport has extended the free parking duration at Terminal 1 arrival pick-up areas from 10 minutes to 15 minutes, effective from Friday, 26 December.

The rule applies to both private vehicles and taxi services, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) said.

The new pickup rules, which were enforced on 13 December at Terminal 1, stated that commercial vehicles must wait at designated parking zones, P3 and P4, where they will get 10 minutes of complimentary parking. This duration has now been increased to 15 minutes, post which, charges will be imposed.

According to The Hindu report, beyond the 15 minute period, cab operators will be charged ₹100 for the first 30 minutes, followed by ₹50 for each additional hour.

However, commuters that use services such as Rapido, Namma Yatri continue to walk over one km from Terminal 1 to the P4 pick-up area with their luggage – a rule that has drawn backlash over the last few days.

“To further ease passenger movement and enhance the arrival experience, passengers can choose between a fleet of shuttles (every seven minutes), six cars, and 10 buggies operating to and from the P3/P4 pick-up areas,” BIAL said.

As per earlier rule, vehicles that exceed the time were charged ₹150 for an 8 to 13 minute stay and ₹300 for 13 to 18 minutes. Any vehicle overstaying beyond 18 minutes were towed to the nearest police station, and applicable fines and towing charges were levied.

Cab drivers protest

Lokesh, a cab driver who frequently picks up and drops passengers from the airport, earlier said that if the measure was to be implemented, he would be facing losses.

“We do not want this implemented in the way they want to do it. Our groups plan to hold a protest. We have submitted a letter to the airport authorities today,” he had told South First earlier this month.

He had said that most of the time it is the airport authorities who do not manage traffic properly within the pick-up zones, and then fine the cab drivers if they stay for long while waiting for passengers who have booked their cabs.

“We do not want to waste time in the airport. We want to pick our passengers and get going. If I have to pay the fines they are proposing, how will I manage my family?” he had asked.
