Synopsis: The NIMS Resident Doctors’ Association has condemned an alleged incident of abuse, threats and assault at the hospital’s emergency department on August 31. The RDA alleged that a patient’s bystander threatened doctors, claimed political connections and assaulted security personnel. It demanded an inquiry, police action and stronger security measures to protect healthcare workers.
The NIMS Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) has condemned an alleged incident of abuse, threats and assault at the emergency department of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), claiming that the bystander of a patient threatened doctors by saying he had political influence and was acquainted with Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
The incident allegedly occurred around 12.30 am on Monday, August 31, in the Red Triage area of the NIMS emergency department. According to the NIMS RDA, a patient was brought dead to the emergency department, and the doctors on duty carried out their responsibilities appropriately, with no delay or negligence.
The RDA alleged that despite this, the person accompanying the patient verbally abused doctors and other healthcare workers, used offensive and threatening language, and attempted to intimidate the staff on duty. The person also allegedly claimed to have political influence and an acquaintance with the chief minister, the RDA said.
According to the doctors’ association, the individual subsequently went to the hospital’s first floor, where he allegedly physically assaulted security personnel on duty, leaving one or more staff members injured.
The NIMS RDA said the incident reflected a serious threat to the safety of resident doctors, nurses, security personnel and other healthcare workers.
“Doctors and healthcare workers should never have to work under the fear of threats, verbal abuse or physical assault while providing medical services,” the RDA said in its statement.

The association has demanded an immediate and comprehensive official inquiry into the incident. It has also called for the preservation and review of all CCTV footage related to the incident and for the injured security personnel to undergo appropriate medical examination, with their injuries formally documented.
The RDA further demanded that appropriate police and legal action be initiated over the alleged assault, threats and abuse.
The association has also sought an investigation into the security lapse that allegedly allowed the incident to occur.
The RDA called for a significant strengthening of security in the emergency department, particularly in the Red Triage area, with adequate numbers of trained security personnel available round the clock.
It also demanded stricter regulation of attendants’ entry into critical areas of the emergency department and the introduction of a Rapid Response Security Protocol to ensure an immediate response whenever doctors or other healthcare workers face threats or violence.
The security personnel, the RDA said, should receive specialised training in managing violent situations, de-escalating conflicts and protecting healthcare workers.
“Verbal abuse, threats or attacks against doctors cannot be normalised as part of the medical profession,” the NIMS RDA said. “Doctors can provide timely and effective medical care during emergencies only when they can work in a safe and fear-free environment.”
The association demanded a zero-tolerance policy towards threats and violence against healthcare workers and urged the NIMS administration to respond immediately and put in place stringent, permanent security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
