Is oil good for your hair?

With the onset of summer, the challenge of managing sweaty, oily hair becomes an integral part of daily grooming rituals. Amidst the plethora of hair care practices, one enduring tradition spans generations and cultures, particularly in South India – oiling the scalp and hair.

Surrounding this timeless ritual are layers of myths and misconceptions, especially concerning its impact on hair growth and loss.

Speaking to South First, renowned dermatologist and trichologist Dr Divya Sharma of Divya’s Skin and Hair Clinic in Bengaluru, debunks these myths and sheds light on the truth about oiling hair during the scorching summer months.

Busting myths one at a time

Many people believe that oiling hair promotes hair health, leading to strong, lustrous, and overall healthy hair. They apply an array of oils ranging from coconut and almond to olive and various aromatic blends, drawn to their purported nourishing virtues.

“Such oils are believed to moisturise the scalp, strengthen the hair follicles, and even stimulate hair growth. However, oil alone doesn’t wield such powers,” explains Dr Sharma.

She dispels one of the most pervasive myths surrounding hair care — the notion that oiling directly stimulates hair growth. “In truth, oiling doesn’t directly influence hair growth or loss. Rather, it’s the massage that enhances microcirculation. The hair roots are nestled deep within the skin, beyond the direct influence of oil,” she clarifies.

Hair growth is determined by genetics, health, and other factors. Nevertheless, oils can play a role in averting hair breakage by nourishing and strengthening the hair shaft, which may lead to the appearance of thicker, fuller hair over time.

Excessive oiling isn’t ideal during summer

Another common myth suggests that oiling hair, particularly in summer, can lead to increaed hair loss. Dr Sharma debunks this notion as well. However, she warns against excessive oiling during this season, cautioning against its potential to escalate dandruff issues.

Explaining further, Dr Sharma says, “Given the natural propensity of the scalp to sweat during summer and the daily rigors of life, coupled with physical activities, adding oil atop this mix could intensify scalp inflammation, worsening dandruff.”

How to take care of hair during summer

Dr Sharma offers some valuable tips for oiling hair during the summer:

  • Apply oil to the hair, not the scalp.
  • Excess oil can attract dirt to a sweaty scalp. Apply a few drops of oil to the hair before bathing.
  • Concentrate shampoo application on the scalp, ensuring thorough removal of any excess oil.
  • Coconut oil stands out as the most effective in penetrating the hair cuticle. There’s scant evidence to suggest that pricier, exotic oils outperform coconut oil.
  • Coconut oil excels in combating hair texture issues and provides effective moisture.
  • Employ gentle scalp massage to enhance blood circulation.
