In a first, doctors at Hyderabad hospitals perform heart transplant on polio survivor

Doctors at Kamineni Hospital at LB Nagar in Hyderabad have successfully performed the first-ever heart transplant on a polio survivor.

The recipient was identified as one Bhaskar, a 45-year-old tailor from the Khammam district of Telangana.

He had been suffering from severe heart disease, which became aggravated in the past three years due to his partial polio condition, said the hospital in a statement on Wednesday, 29 May.

Bhaskar’s condition led to irregular heartbeats and insufficient blood supply, causing a range of health complications.

His condition necessitated a heart transplant — a complex procedure that took five hours to complete.

The surgery

The transplant team included Heart Transplant Department head and consultant cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Vishal V Khante and consultant heart transplant and cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Rajesh Deshmukh.

The surgery reportedly involved the removal of Bhaskar’s old heart, implanting the new one donated by a brain-dead individual, and reconnecting all blood vessels and valves with precision.

Commenting on the achievement, Dr Vishal V Khante said, “Following the successful surgery, Bhaskar is on the path to recovery, and is gradually regaining his ability to engage in daily activities.”

He added: “Previously confined to bed due to extreme fatigue, he can now walk significant distances and looks forward to resuming his normal life.”

Khante also noted: “However, post-surgery, Bhaskar requires intensive monitoring and ongoing medication to prevent organ rejection, and our team is constantly monitoring his condition.”
