K Suresh was found unconscious in his hostel room. Though rushed to the hospital, his life could not be saved.
Synopsis: The student, K Suresh, was found unconscious in his hostel room on Thursday morning. Though he was rushed to the hospital’s casualty department, his life could not be saved. His family and other students alleged that harassment and work pressure might have led to his death. Police said the junior doctor had been suffering from depression.
The death of a 26-year-old postgraduate medical student at Osmania Medical College has triggered protests, with his family alleging that harassment by senior students may have contributed to his death.
K Suresh, a first-year postgraduate student in General Surgery, was found dead in his hostel room on the premises of Osmania General Hospital on Thursday, 16 April, morning.
According to police, concerned fellow students forced into his room after Suresh did not respond to repeated knocks and found him lying unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital’s casualty ward, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The Afzalgunj Police registered a case based on his mother, K Nagamani’s complaint.
The FIR recorded her account of the sequence of events. “On 16.04.2026 at about 07:30 hours, her son… used to call her daily as usual. However, later at about 08:45 hours, she received a phone call from her son’s friend… informing her that Suresh was lying unconscious in his room,” the mother said in her complaint.
She further alleged that her son may have taken the extreme step due to harassment by senior students and sought legal action against those responsible.
“She suspects that her son might have committed suicide due to pressure from seniors… and requested to take necessary legal action against the persons responsible for pressurising her son,” the FIR stated.
Family members, along with fellow students, staged a protest near the hospital premises, demanding a thorough investigation and accountability. The protest led to tension for several hours, with police deploying more personnel to manage the situation.
Investigators were examining multiple angles, including allegations of harassment, duty-related pressure, and possible ragging. Statements of classmates, hostel residents and faculty members were being recorded.
Police officers said Suresh had been facing depression in recent days and was reportedly undergoing counselling, though the role of mental health factors in the case has not been conclusively established.
Hostel sources indicated that he had been distressed over duty hours and workload in the preceding weeks.
The Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association (HRDA) expressed concern over the death, stating that it reflected deeper systemic issues within medical training.
“Doctors, especially postgraduate trainees, often face intense emotional stress, long hours, and high expectations, which can silently take a toll on their mental health,” the association said.
The association called for immediate measures, including accessible psychological counselling, awareness programmes, and mechanisms that would allow doctors to seek help without being stigmatised.
Police said the FIR has been registered as a case of suspicious death and may be altered based on findings during the course of the investigation.
As inquiries continued, the incident intensified scrutiny on the working conditions of junior doctors and the need for safeguards within medical institutions.
