Best malayalam movies of 2022

The year 2022 has been great for Malayalam cinema, from both creative and commercial perspectives.

The year witnessed the release of some great projects in different genres. Here are a few of the best Malayalam movies of 2022 that left film lovers in awe:

Thallumaala

A fabulously fun-filled and stylish action movie, Thallumaala is directed by Khalid Rahman. Nothing you saw before in the genre has been close to this craziness.

It’s a technically flawless movie with incredible music tracks. Tovino Thomas, Shine Tom Chacko, and the rest of the cast were terrific.

Thallumaala is filled with some great top-notch sequences. It aims at entertaining the audience and does so with brute force; it never lets up, not even for a second.

Bhoothakaalam

This directorial debut of Rahul Sadasivan made a huge impact on film-goers.

Bhoothakaalam is one of the scariest movies of all time. With its slow narrative and unsettling atmosphere, the film builds a fear of the unnatural. It has Shane Nigam and Revathi in the lead roles.

Rorschach

Rorschach is an ensemble piece. It is a cracking psychological thriller with the incredible Mammootty on top form.

From start to finish, it was an enthralling experience. Nisam Basheer’s direction is superb; as is the cinematography of Nimesh Ravi and the soundtrack by Midhun Mukundan.

The 150-minute movie just flies by so quickly because we get sucked up into the plot right from the beginning.

Appan

Maju’s Appan is a gripping, intense drama with some lovely performances. There is something so pure and complex about Sunny Wayne’s performance.

It also has notable performances by every actor. The film is a deeply unsettling family drama and is a must-watch.

Mukundan Unni Associates

With Vineeth Sreenivasan at his best, this Abhinav Sunder Nayak’s dark comedy is wildly humorous and distressingly serious. It’s funny and clever.

Mukundan Unni Associates stars Vineeth Sreenivasan, Aarsha Chandini Baiju, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Sudhi Koppa, and Tanvi Ram in the lead roles. It is like a breath of fresh air.

Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey

The best part of Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey is its characters. Similarly, the actors who played the roles look realistic and inherently relatable.

Personally, this is the funniest film I’ve seen in a really long time. The casting director should be congratulated in the same breath as the director.

Aavasavyuham

A magical realism movie directed by Krishand, Aavasavyuham is an unconventional cross-genre fusion film addressing a wide range of topics.

It has psychedelic visuals and is humorous at the same time. The film cleverly combines environmental issues in general and the ecologically fragile wetlands of Kerala in specific.

Aavasavyuham: The Arbit Documentation of An Amphibian has Rahul Rajagopal, Sreenath Babu, Sreejith Babu, and Zhinz Shan in the main lead.

Nna Thaan Case Kodu

It’s a laugh riot. The beauty of Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval’s Nna Thaan Case Kodu is the organic nature of the humour.

Nobody will forget the magistrate character (played by PP Kunhikrishnan). The cast delivers jaw-dropping and sublimely funny performances. It’s a must-watch.

Pada

Pada is based on a true story about four men who held the Palakkad district collector hostage in exchange for tribal land rights. They called themselves Ayyankali Pada.

It has a huge star cast, including Kunchacko Boban, Joju George, Vinayakan, Dileesh Pothan, Indrans, Unnimaya Prasad, Arjun Radhakrishnan, Prakash Raj, and Salim Kumar.

Directed by Kamal KM, the film has a couple of memorable songs and excellent cinematography.

Bheeshma Parvam

Bheeshma Parvam has Amal Neerad in his best form and Mammootty essaying a powerful and stylish role.

The supporting cast is unnecessary, but Soubin Shahir and Shine Tom Chacko put in decent turns. It is a rare example of the Malayalam movie industry getting things spot-on when it comes to creating a mass hero film.

We’ve seen this plot before, but it was not done this way. The only word that keeps coming back to mind when reviewing this movie is: exhilarating.

Other Malayalam movies

While these are the best Malayalam movies of 2022, there are a few good projects that left a mark in Mollywood: Jo & Jo (comedy-drama), Rajeev Ravi’s police-investigation movie Kuttavum Sikshayum, slow-burning thriller Ela Veezha Poonchira and youthful romantic comedy Super Sharanya (starring Anaswara Rajan, Arjun Ashokan and Mamitha Baiju).
