Varun Tej

Varun Tej, another “mega” hero in the making, sighs disapprovingly when a question is shot at him about his love life.

The actor interacted with the media personnel on Wednesday, 23 August, ahead of the release of his much-awaited action thriller Gandeevadhari Arjuna this weekend.

Varun and Lavanya Tripathi have been in a relationship for quite some time now.

Apparently, the buzz surrounding his personal life, his girlfriend Lavanya, and their marriage is doing rounds more than his upcoming movie ever since the couple came out in the open about their relationship.

Varun seems to have learnt the knack of keeping his personal life confidential and also mastered how to dodge questions from the media.

To a query posed by a journalist about his first meetup with Lavanya, Varun Tej replied with a gentle smile: “Nenu cheppanandi (I won’t tell you!) Even if I speak for an hour about the movie, I am sure your headline would probably be about my personal life, love or marriage. I don’t mind!”

However, he revealed that he will probably tie the knot this year.

A responsible movie

Varun Tej admitted that he could sense what stories make an engaging watch on the screen. “The focus of style-laced action flicks in Telugu gets diverted as the story progresses. Substance and content usually take a backseat.”

He explained, “So, when director Praveen Sattaru narrated the story to me, keeping aside the action stunts in foreign locations and the backdrop of the story, I was impressed with the point he wanted to convey through the film. It is not the conflict that we face today. It has long-term effects. I liked the conflict and emotion in the movie.”

He further added, “As an actor, you don’t get to do responsible films every time. Sometimes you have to do movies like F2 (2019) and F3 (2022). Ghani (2022) was again an action-family entertainer. Only a few scripts could probably bring an actor closer to the audience. And that is Gandeevadhari Arjuna.”

Varun avowed that the reason for him to believe Praveen Sattaru was that the latter makes realistic stories.

“Praveen works differently from the typical filmmaking that we usually see in Telugu cinema. I have seen his work — Guntur Talkies (2016), LBW (2011), and PSV Garuda Vega (2017). I have a good opinion of his style of making. I like the sensibilities in his stories.”

As regards the Western-styled action stunts in Gandeevadhari Arjuna, the actor said, “Praveen Sattaru may have been influenced by the West while making action flicks, but I believe emotion in the current film is very rooted. If the core emotion is rooted, it doesn’t matter whether you show a Western gunfight or village-backdrop story or 100 years period drama.”

An archaic Telugu title

About the title and his role, Varun Tej said, “The title Gandeevadhari Arjuna means a call for help. So, Arjuna is the saviour in the story. I play the character of a bodyguard, say private security personnel. It’s not a spy film.”

The actor elucidated further: “The story deals with a problem that the world is facing. Pollution, climate change, rainfall scarcity, and third-world countries are heavily affected due to global warming. We don’t give much thought to where our daily waste is going.”

He added, “Gandeevadhari Arjuna doesn’t preach about what to do. It just puts problems before you, whether you want to change the way you live is up to you.”

Varun Tej also spoke about the problems the world is facing and urged people to act.

“Waste needs landfills to recycle. Plastic takes 100 years to disintegrate into the earth. Half of the waste that we throw is harmful to the environment. We don’t give much thought when it comes to practice. We buy plastic bottles without giving them much thought.”

The Fidaa (2017) star believes that his team broke the regular mould of storytelling on the silver screen. “The issues portrayed in Gandeevadhari Arjuna are world problems at the macro level and we tried to show them at the micro level through the cinema.”

He added, “The story happens in four days. The fights are realistic and computer graphics have been used only to enhance the locations. Praveen has a good knack for writing action stories.”

Meanwhile, Varun’s period drama titled Matka is a story based on gambling where he will be seen in four different looks in different timelines. The story is set in Visakhapatnam Port.
