Actor Urvashi

Actress Urvashi, who has made a name for herself in all four South Indian film industries as a versatile actress and a brilliant comedienne, says that a heroine must willingly take up comedy to turn into a comedienne.

At a press conference held on Tuesday, 13 June, Urvashi spoke at length about her character in director Subhash Lalitha Subramanyam’s upcoming film Charles Enterprises.

“In Charles Enterprises, I play a mother who is immensely superstitious to the point of being a simpleton. She has a son who has a problem with his vision post-dusk. So, to ensure that her son gets to lead a normal life like others, she starts imposing conditions and laying down rules for him. These rules destroy the self-confidence of the boy,” Urvashi explained.

The film, which has already emerged as a big hit in Malayalam, is now being released in Tamil as well.

It features Urvashi, Kalaiyarasan, Balu Varghese, Guru Somasundaram and Sujith Shankar in key roles.

When asked why there is a dearth of comediennes in Tamil cinema now, while there were great comediennes like Manorama and herself at one point in time, Urvashi replied: “Heroines can do comedy only if they willingly take it up. Comedy is not like a serious role or a romantic role that requires duets. I had it in me and I consciously brought it out.”

The versatile actress also recalled an incident. “When someone recently asked me to go inside for a scene in a film, I did it in a funny way. Nobody taught me. Therefore, humour is important even in our body language. It is a very difficult thing to do.”

Urvashi further added, “My personal opinion is that if actress Laila had continued to act for a longer period, she would have done a great job. Laila had great taste. She would use small cute expressions to deliver an enjoyable performance. That is very rare.”

When asked about her secret to being young, the actress shot back, “I don’t let go of any opportunity to laugh. Be it a stage or any place, I don’t miss out on the opportunity to laugh.”

“Laughter is probably the only thing in this world that we cannot buy with money. So, as much as possible, smile. Just to appear decent, don’t limit your laughter and smile. Laughter is the secret to remaining young,” Urvashi signed off.
