Darshana… Sarvam Sada Nin Sourabhyam…” is perhaps the most widely played song in the loop in recent times. This chartbuster from the Mayalam film Hridayam (2022) created more ripples than any other song on YouTube.

The man behind the work is none other than Hesham Abdul Wahab.

Now, he’s enjoying being in the spotlight for yet another reason — the magical tunes of the forthcoming Telugu movie Kushi.

Starring Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in the lead, Kushi is directed by Ninnu Kori-fame Shiva Nirvana. The film produced by Mythri Movie Makers will hit theatres worldwide on 1 September.

Undoubtedly, the music compositions in the flick got a wider reach and acceptance by people, irrespective of region.

“I didn’t expect the songs to become such a raging hit. Wherever I’m going, I keep hearing the tunes of ‘Na Roja Nuvve‘. Be it in the airport, someone’s caller tune, ‘Aradhya‘ is relentlessly played in a loop, especially the Telugu version,” Wahab said during a brief chat with the media in Hyderabad.

He also noted, “Be it Dubai or Kerala, songs from Kushi have become a sensation. Kushi gave me wings to fly. Tollywood is one of the biggest centres for entertainment and art. I believe I am blessed to be part of the industry.”

Hesham Abdul Wahab visited Turkey to experiment with the music. He took two long years to bring originality to the “Darshana” song.

“Right from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, we have a wide range of beautiful musical instruments — Veena, Sitar, stringed instrument Rabaab from Kashmir. Rendering the music for Kushi has been a thrilling experience. Till yesterday, we were all excited to finish the work. But now, it is for the people to experience it visually. It has put me into another zone. It is always a great journey,” he said.

‘Supposed to be a teaser’

The music director says that Kushi gives more importance to the music.

“Vijay Deverakonda happens to be a diehard fan of Mani Ratnam’s work. That’s the reason we incorporated all his film titles. This is director Shiva Nirvana’s thought. The lyrics of all the songs were penned by the director himself,” Wahab explained.

He observed, “If you see the work of ‘Naa Roja Nuvve‘ to the recently released single ‘Osi Pellama‘, more or less, you will find native-folkish style. Shiva Nirvana has the vision to direct something that would touch all section audiences irrespective of regions.”

According to him, working on the title song has been the most challenging part of Kushi.

“We didn’t plan to make it a full song. The initial plan was to release it as a teaser. After the launch, Vijay Deverakonda and Shiva liked it so much and wanted it to be a full-fledged song. Since its portion was huge, we had to finish the ‘antara‘ and ‘charanam‘ in a limited time. For the title song, we had taken 20-25 demos, it took some time but Shiva’s support was great.”

From Mollywood to Tollywood

Post the success of Hridayam, Hesaham Abdul Wahab got a call from Mythri Movie Makers in Hyderabad.

“My first film was a hearty family entertainer in Malayalam titled ‘Salt Mango Tree‘. ‘Hridayam‘ happened to be my 10th film. Within a few months after its release, I got a call from Tollywood. Audiences are curious to watch the chemistry between Vijay and Samantha in the film,” he said.

He further added, “Kushi has two important characters. In fact, the story belongs to them. The music, of course, would touch your heart and leave a mark even when you after you head for home.”

“Before entering the film industry, I sought advice from my only go-to person — my actor-cousin Fahadh Faasil. Compared to Mollywood, Tollywood is big on budget and scale. The skill of a technician can’t be measured with budgets though,” he said.

Wahab says he likes NTR Jr, Ram Charan, Vijay Deverakonda, and Nani in Tollywood. “I’m happy and forever grateful to have landed in Tollywood. I want to experiment with all genres.”

He has a handful of projects in the pipeline. Nani’s Hai Nanna will be an emotional story. The untitled flick starring Sharwanand is directed by Sriram Aditya.

A thriller titled Spark is underway. Another crazy project in Telugu will be announced soon.
