Telugu watchlist for July 2024

June ended with the grand worldwide release of Prabhas-starrer Kalki 2898 AD. The pan-India film gave a boost to Telugu cinema, which otherwise hasn’t seen any blockbusters after Sidhu Jonnalagadda’s Tillu Square in March.

The industry did deliver a handful of hits later though, like Om Bheem Bush, Gaami, and Gangs of Godavari.

Since Kalki 2898 AD fever continues to grip the box office and the big-budget multi-starrer is running to packed houses everywhere, no star hero film will be released in Telugu anytime soon.

Meanwhile, as July 2024 is likely to set in, a few small and medium-budget Telugu films are expected to try their luck in the market, including Priyadarshi’s Darling and Allu Sirish’s Buddy. But only time will tell if they can take over the box office.

Well, here’s the Telugu watchlist for July 2024:

Purushothamudu

Headlined by Raj Tarun and Hasini Sudhir, Purushothamudu also stars Ramya Krishna, Prakash Raj, Murli Sharma, Brahmanandam, Mukesh Khanna, Brahmaji, and Viran Muttamsetty in prominent roles.

In the film, Raj Tarun plays a common man named Rachit Ram, who turns a saviour for a village by fighting a businessman.

Purushothamudu was written and directed by Ram Bhimana (Rom). Ramesh Tejawat and Prakash Tejawat are producing it under the banner of Shree Sridevi Productions.

Gopi Sundar composed the music and background score. PG Vinda is the cinematographer and Marthand K Venkatesh is the editor.

The makers of Purushothamudu recently launched the teaser at a grand event in Hyderabad. Addressing the gathering, Raj Tarun said he shared a good understanding with the director. “They had plans to release the film in July, but the release date will be announced after the censor formalities.”

Ram Bhimana said, “Purushothamudu was designed on a big canvas and presents Raj Tarun in a different avatar.”

While the movie is expected to hit the theatres in July 2024, an official announcement is still awaited.

Before venturing into movies, Ram worked as an ad filmmaker, pursued a Diploma in Film Technology from the London Film Academy, and specialised in Screenplay Writing from the New Media Technology in Dublin, Ireland.

He turned heads with the short film Asl Plz (2011), which won over 10 million views on YouTube and laurels at several film festivals, including the Hyderabad Short Film Festival and the German Film Festival. Courage, another short film from Ram, also won awards.

Ram Bhimana debuted in the Telugu industry with Hum Tum (2013). He followed it up with Akatayi (2015).

On the other hand, Raj Tarun hasn’t had a proper hit for a long time. He appeared in Nagarjuna’s Naa Saami Ranga (2023), where she played a key role. The period action drama, directed by choreographer Vijay Binni, was a flop.

He is currently working on Bhale Unnade under the direction of J Sivasai Vardhan. NV Kiran Kumar is backing it. The makers recently launched the second single, “Set Avuthundaa Pairu“, from the movie.

Darling

Priyadarshi’s Darling has created quite a buzz on social media, thanks to the posters and the frustration anthem “Khalasay“. It comes with the caption, “Why This Kolaveri“, the popular song sung by Dhanush from his Tamil film 3 (2021).

Priyadarshi and Ananya Nagalla play a newly married couple in the flick. Moin, Shiva Reddy, Muralidhar Goud, Kalynee Raj, Sunitha Manohar, and Mullapudi Rajeshwari play key roles.

Darling was written and directed by Aswin Raam and produced by K Niranjan Reddy of Primeshow Entertainment. The production house recently bankrolled the superhit pan-India film Hanu-Man.

The Vivek Sagar musical has Naresh Ramadurai’s cinematography and Pradeep E Raghav’s editing. Balagam (2023)-fame Kasarla Shyam penned the lyrics for all the songs in Darling.

Darling is slated for release in cinema halls on 19 July.

In an interview, Nabha Natesh said Darling gave her immense creative satisfaction. According to her, the rom-com promises an “entertaining ride filled with drama and laughter”.

Director Aswin Raam said the film became a reality since the producers believed in the content. He also promised a new-age romantic comedy.

The lyrical video of the “Khalasay” song, released on 22 June, caught the fancy of fans and netizens. Given the amazing response to the song, the makers launched the BTS video on Wednesday, 26 June.

Priyadarshi was last seen in the blockbuster hit film Om Bheem Bush, where he shared the screen with Sree Vishnu and Rahul Ramakrishna. It was helmed by Sree Harsha Konuganti.

The actor played the protagonist in Venu Yeldandi’s debut directorial Balagam, which won awards and nominations at several international film festivals.

Later, Priyadarshi won accolades for his intense performance in Ajay Bhupathis’s psychological mystery film Mangalavaaram (2023), where Payal Rajput played the protagonist. He was also part of the web series Save the Tigers 2.

Buddy

Allu Sirish is all set to entertain the audience with a fantasy action thriller titled Buddy. Directed by Sam Anton, the film also stars Ajmal Amir as the antagonist and Gayathri Bharadwaj as the leading lady. Prisha Rajesh Singh, Mukesh Kumar, and Ali appear in the supporting roles.

Allu Sirish plays a pilot named Captain Aditya Ram. Buddy is the name of the teddy bear, the lead character in the flick. The duo join forces to take on Ajmal.

KE Gnanavel Raja and Aadhana Gnanavelraja are producing Buddy under the banner of Studio Green Films Private Limited. Sensational composer-rapper Hiphop Tamizha is scoring the music.

Ruben handled the editing and Krishnan Vasant took care of cinematography.

Buddy was initially thought to be a free-make of Tamil fantasy-action flick Teddy (2021), helmed by Shakti Soundar Rajan and headlined by Arya, Sayyeshaa, Sathish, and Karunakaran. However, the trailer proved it wrong.

Buddy‘s trailer, released recently, is trending No 3 on YouTube with over 1 million views. The unique plot and high-octane action sequences apparently piqued the interest of the fans.

At the trailer launch, Ajmal Amir compared Tom Sirish with Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise. He said “I felt like I was facing Tom Cruise because of Sirish’s striking resemblance with the actor. This made the fight scenes in Buddy cinematic and intense.”

The Telugu movie will hit the screens on 26 July.
