Singer Kalpana Raghavendar, who was hospitalised on Tuesday, 4 March, after being found unconscious at her Hyderabad residence, has refuted the claims that she had attempted suicide.

Kalpana, in a video message, said: “I am 45 years old, and at this age, I am pursuing my PhD, LLB, alongside updating myself in music. I am able to do this with my husband’s encouragement.”

“Due to all these engagements, I have had stress and issues with sleep. For many years I have been having trouble sleeping, for the same I am taking treatment from the doctor for insomnia. (On the day of the incident) I took an extra dosage of the prescribed medicine, due to which, I lost consciousness.”

Further denying the rumours of family issues, the singer added, “If I am alive today, it is because of my husband, at the right time, he took the help of the police, and they rescued me. My husband and my daughter are god’s blessings for me.”

“I will be back to singing once I recover,” Kalpana added, thanking the police, media, and her colleagues.

‘Don’t manipulate and mislead’

On Wednesday, 5 March, the singer’s daughter too denied the reports, and said, “Apart from being a singer, she is doing her LLB and PhD, due to which, she suffers from insomnia, so the doctor had prescribed the sleep medicines for the same. It was just a slight overdose of taking sleeping pills because of stress. This is not a suicide attempt. Please don’t manipulate and mislead the info. There is no dispute in the family, my parents are happy, I am happy. There are no issues.”

Kalpana, the daughter of playback singer TS Raghavendra, has recorded more than 1,500 songs in various languages. She gained widespread recognition after winning Star Singer Malayalam in 2010. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with renowned composers like Ilaiyaraaja and AR Rahman. Kalpana has also appeared as a judge on several music reality shows and participated in Bigg Boss Telugu Season 1.
