On Tuesday, 4 March, renowned singer and dubbing artist Kalpana Raghavendar was admitted to a private hospital in Nizampet after being found unconscious at her residence.

According to The Hindu report, the police, upon being alerted by the neighbours, Kalpana was rescued from her residence in an unconscious state. While the reasons remain unknown, the police are investigating the case.

While the incident was reported to be an alleged suicide attempt, on Wednesday, 5 March, speaking to the media, the singer’s daughter denying the reports, said, “Apart from being a singer, she is doing her LLB and PhD, due to which, she suffers from insomnia, so the doctor had prescribed the sleep medicines for the same. It was just a slight overdose of taking sleeping pills because of stress. This is not a suicide attempt. Please don’t manipulate and mislead the info. There is no dispute in the family, my parents are happy, I am happy. There are no issues.”

According to the news agency PTI, Kalpana is now stable, and the police will collect details once she regains consciousness.

Chinmayi condemns media

Amid this, singer Chinmayi Sripada took to X, to condemn the Telugu news channels for not following media ethics while reporting the news.

She wrote: “A brilliant genius of a colleague and a singer I have always highly respected has attempted to take her life and is in ICU. Telugu channels calling people who have absolutely NO familial relationship with her asking for an opinion to ‘discuss’ this is perhaps the worst anyone could do. What are all these panellists and ‘journalists’ going to do discussing this on TV? For her to get better and see all this bullshit?”

She further wrote: “Anyone who has ethics should decline to participate. There are guidelines that the Press should follow in reporting suicide. Many people flout all these rules. Requesting people in the music and film fraternity to not participate and decline.”

Kalpana, the daughter of playback singer TS Raghavendra, has recorded more than 1,500 songs in various languages. She gained widespread recognition after winning Star Singer Malayalam in 2010. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with renowned composers like Ilaiyaraaja and AR Rahman. Kalpana has also appeared as a judge on several music reality shows and participated in Bigg Boss Telugu Season 1.
