Reacting to the recent Justice Hema Committee Report findings, Telugu actor Nani has expressed deep concern about the ongoing misconduct towards women in Malayalam cinema. The report exposed sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry.
Nani believes the situation has worsened, and continues to disturb him. “This has bothered me since the Nirbhaya case. It never stops and keeps disturbing me. I’m scared of scrolling through my phone,” he told NDTV.
He observed that while social media is booming, it also led to a decline in societal values. “The situation was much better 20 years ago. We are in the worst state now,” he lamented.
However, Nani expressed hope for the future, particularly because of his interactions with children, believing that they will create a better world.
Recently, Nani also addressed comments made by Kannada actor Rishab Shetty, who claimed Bollywood films portray India negatively at international festivals.
The Telugu actor disagreed, stating, “I don’t think Bollywood shows India in a bad light. Rishab likely meant more rooted stories. There are magical Hindi films, so I don’t believe he meant it that way.”
In another interview, Nani shared how Amitabh Bachchan’s Agneepath (1990) captivated him as a child and sparked his love for Hindi cinema.
“I’ve probably watched more Hindi films than people living in the north. There are amazing directors I dream of working with. I’m a huge fan of Bachchan sir. Agneepath significantly influenced my desire to make films and shaped the intensity I seek in my characters. It was a childhood inspiration.”
Nani continued, “My first film idea as a director was inspired by Agneepath. Although I haven’t made it yet, I still have the story, along with two or three others that need updating for current times. Some directors I’ve worked with know about this project, and they’re eager to bring it to life.”
Meanwhile, Nani’s film Saripodhaa Sanivaaram releases on 29 August in multiple languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi. Directed by Vivek Athreya, the action thriller is Nani’s most expensive project, featuring a star-studded cast, including SJ Suryah and Priyanka Mohan.
The film’s trailer created a buzz on the internet. The movie will be released with a lengthy runtime of two hours and 50 minutes.
